Ron Rinker on fitting Suits and SportJackets:
"Every man is built differently...including the jacket, slack and shirt, we take 38 different measurements.....depending on your shoulder structure and your posture, we'll determine certain problem areas you may have... for example...a man who has a roll under the collar of his jacket or shirt, generally has high, square shoulders...lowering the collar will eliminate this roll...
we use a special instrument to measure how forward-pitched your head is in relationship to your back, and how high each shoulder is...most men don't have the same height on both shoulders...one shoulder is lower than the other, so as a result of that low shoulder, the coat is going to do two things: it's not going to lay the same on each side of his neck...it's gonna hug his neck on one side and on the other it's going to break away, on an off-the rack coat, and also it's going to break differently underneath the arm in the back...so by taking that into consideration the coat is cut so that one shoulder is lower than the other to fit the man's shoulders exactly...
"Perfect fit" is a subjective term...what is a perfect fit is determined in the eye of the beholder...some people look for comfort and style, which is what I look for, a blend of the two...as opposed to a suit that fits like a glove, but you can't move in it...perfect fit means being able to enhance the man's appearance and have him feel comfortable at the same time..."
Getting ready for a Ron Rinker fitting: "It would be helpful if you brought in your favorite suit, or sportcoat and slack...if you're ordering shirts, the shirt that you feel has the best collar...if you like a variety of things, show me a variety of things..bring them all in...I can see several things on you, we can see them together, and I can show you what we can due to make the look you like look better...
I try to work off a model that is the favorite of the customer - that way I'm not shocking him, trying to change the way he looks, and make him appear like a fashion plate when he really doesn't want to be one - he just wants to look nice and feel comfortable in the process...bringing in your favorite garment is really critical...also, if you have a particular fabric you are fond of, bring it in...anything you can show me is helpful....
